Western women face two issues when it comes to clothing in Japan: the few clothes available that fit the Western figure and the style crisis.
Clothes
Regarding size, Japanese women tend to be much smaller than Western women, and the majority of clothing available in Japan reflects this. For smaller women who have previously had a tough time finding clothes in their home countries, shopping for clothes in Japan can be a great experience. However, most Western women, at some point during their stay feel like an elephant. Fortunately fashionable clothes in larger sizes for women are becoming more available, and clothes shops you would find at home are popping up. Most Western women who can’t find clothes in Japan, or find the prices too hefty, either do a big shop when they go home or use mail-order shopping. If you find yourself comparing your body with those of women around you and don’t like how you feel, then you need to know that most Japanese women admire your curves and wish they had a figure like yours!
Style
Most Japanese women pay great attention to their appearance, including their clothes. Designer clothes are everyday clothes, high heels are ideal for shopping or travelling, and everything is in immaculate condition. Many Western women start to feel unattractive and frumpy. But bear in mind that being in another country means that you can explore many different things, including new styles that you may not have considered at home.
Shoes
Shoes can also pose a problem because of size and style. It is difficult to find anything over a UK size 5 / US 6.5 but if you ask the assistant, there may be some in the stock room, however styles may be questionable. If you are a UK size 4 (US 5.5) or smaller, then you likely have a wider range of styles to choose from then you would have in your home country.
Underwear
For women whose breasts are around a 32B and who would like them to appear bigger or shapelier, Japan is heaven! For the rest of us, however, it is practically impossible to find a bra that will fit, especially if you don’t want padding. The sizing is not quite the same as in your home country, so try before you buy. There is another reason why padding is so prevalent in bras here showing your nipples through your clothing is considered indecent. In terms of panties, note that most here have a high percentage of nylon which may not be ideal for you, especially if you are prone to yeast infections. Rely on friends or family to send you underwear from home.
